The company history dates back to 1917, when the aircraft engine manufacturer Rapp Motorenwerke was renamed Bayerische Motorenwerke ( «Bavarian Motor Works"). At the same time an emblem containing the colors of the flag of Bavaria was approved in the black edging on which located the letters BMW. Nevertheless formally 1916 is considered foundation year of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke on the power of which was later transferred to the production of the BMW.
In 1933 the Bavarian brand created the first car with own design: BMW 303, in addition, was endowed with a steam radiator grille, later became one of the characteristic features of the style of "Bavarians". The company continued to actively develop until World War II began. At this time BMW reoriented almost all capacities under assembly of aircraft engines for fascist troops, but after annexation of territory by the Soviet troops the plant in Munich was destroyed, and release of cars – is forbidden.
The separate page in the history of concern is connected with acquisition of other producers.In particular, in 1994 has been purchased the British Rover Group, uniting the brand Land Rover, Mini and Rover (after 2000 Mini only stayed in the asset). Three years later BMW has made an attempt to get Rolls-Royce Motors, however, the new owner of the company became Volkswagen AG. Nevertheless the Bavarian concern acquired the rights to the brand name and logo and founded a new company – Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
Now the main production of BMW is concentrated in Germany, but there are entities in other countries as well, including — the USA, England, Vietnam, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Russia, the Republic of South Africa. In terms of production, the BMW concern is in the top 15 list globally and lead with confidence in the premium segment.
