The first ever Bmw GS motorcycles have been produced more than three decades ago, in 1980. The Bmw GS series of dual purpose off-road/on-road Bmw motorcycles refer to Gelande/Stra?e (German: off-road/road) or Gelande Sport. These GS bike models are distinguishable from other BMW motorcycles with their extended travel suspension, an upright riding position, and greater front wheels – usually between 19 and 21 inch. According to statistics of Bmw officials, until May 2009, more than 500 thousand Bmw GS motorcycles was manufactured and sold. The GS motorcycles have been available with a variety of different engines, including single-cylinder, twin-cylinder water-cooled and twin-cylinder air- ("Airheads") and air/oil-cooled ("Oilheads" and "Hexheads").
