In 1920, Jujiro Matsuda created a company called Toyo Cork Kogyo in Hiroshima (Japan). As the name implies, at first, the company dealt with the production of cork. But soon Matsuda launches production of cars and in 1931, the name Mazda appears. It is consonant with the name Matsuda as well as the name of the west Asian symbol of wisdom, intelligence and harmony of Ahura Mazda.

The first Mazda car was three-wheel Mazda Go, which was exported to China and India, where it acquired great popularity due to its maneuverability. Mazda Go became one of the many examples of unconventional thinking of Mazda and decisive approach, which was inspired by "spirit of Hiroshima", the embodiment of what the impossible is possible. However, the most impressive way of the unique spirit of Mazda appeared in 1945. Immediately after the atomic bombing, Mazda was actively involved in the reconstruction of Hiroshima as Mazda plant almost was not damaged by the explosion and was used as a focal point for the management of recovery processes and assist citizens.

What distinguishes a truly revolutionary engine? It rotates. This had been the idea of rotary engine invented by Felix Wakelam wherein under the influence of combustion forces instead of the vertical movement of pistons rotating the flat disc. Mazda acquired this technology in the late 1950s and became the only manufacturer, who uses this alternative concept engines, nowadays. The rotary engine, ideal for sports cars due to the high frequency of RPM and compact size and it was used in Mazda models from breathtaking Cosmo 110S to the legendary RX-7 and RX-8. The rotary engine was also used in racing cars of series 787, one of which in 1991 won the race "24 hours Le Mans".

In the 1980s, nobody created roadsters. It seemed that the peak of their popularity in Britain which was in 1950s-1960s ended once and forever. But only, it continued until Mazda came to the stage, as their idea was to create a modern sports roadster, which would differ in reliability and driving pleasure. In an embodiment of daring ideas to life and the creation of the car, which would be ideal to combine the traditional base and driving pleasure.

The weight of the first Mazda MX-5 was only 955 kilograms and proved that a sports car can be easy. It was distinguished by front-engine, rear-wheel drive, and incredible dynamic performance. The roadster life was born again. In fact, people so liked to drive and have Mazda MX-5 that this model became the best-selling roadster of all time.

The Japanese team has never won "Le Mans". But that all was changed in 1991. This was the year when Mazda went against all rules and stated their race cars of 787 series with rotary engines at the oldest and most prestigious endurance race. Despite the fact that 787 lost to competitors in power, they were distinguished by reliability, thanks to which Mazda managed to take the leading position and won the race. It was the first and one of a unique record: Still Mazda is the only winning team from Japan with the car which was not equipped with a piston engine. And all this because of creative thinking and daring.

If you look at Mazda cars created in the late 1990s, you will immediately notice that lateral thinking has helped the unique team of passionate people to create impressive and innovative cars that are a pleasure to drive. From the most popular models of Mazda MX-5 to CX-7, Mazda continues to use the best innovative technical tradition and daring spirit with joy in the following years till now.
