In 1953, Ford Motor Company started production of Ford Transit - light commercial vehicle, which became very popular van in Europe, especially in Britain. In the period between 1965 and 2009, Ford Transit was sold in more than six million units in three different body types. After its release, in some countries, the term "Transit" was used as the name of a universal word for any commercial van of similar size.
The very first Ford Transit was manufactured at the German plant in Cologne from 1953 to 1965 which was a compact van intended for the domestic market in Germany. The second generation of the van was produced between 1965 and 1978 that directly visually linked to Ford Transit in our time. Initially, it was assembled at the plant in Langley, and later, the production moved to Southampton. That Ford Transit had a large wheelbase and it was unusual for the European market, as a constructive advantage was a large loading capacity. Each body types of the commercial van had a different petrol power unit including, 1.7 and 2 liters engines.
Next, an American automobile manufacturer presented Ford Transit Mark 2 which was produced till 1986. Exterior and interior appearance of the model was redesigned as well as a motor which became new gasoline engine volume of 1.6 liters. The fourth and fifth generation of Ford Transit represented a brand new van between 1986 and 1991, especially effect came to bodywork construction as the shape of the front part became sphenoid. Transmission, suspension, and gearbox on the rear axle were also upgraded significantly, while power units have been updated slightly. In 1991, the model experienced a small restyling in appearance and running gear parts. During the next generation of Ford Transit from 1994 to 2000, the front of the body, dashboard are modernized. Also, new Turbo diesel engines were applied.
Such general popularity is due to a wide selection of models supplied by Ford that allowed to pick up the exact automobile for a certain work and personal needs. In 2002, the company completed an impossible mission introducing, even more, economical, compact, and modern Ford Transit Connect.
Throughout the history, Ford Transit was built on a van, minivan, and other body types. In 2006, the seventh generation of the model was premiered. The sports modification of Ford Transit was launched in 2006 when was equipped with an engine rated at 130 HP. Finally, Ford Transit received the award "best van of the year" in 2007 from a group of leading independent journalists from 19 European countries who write about commercial vehicles.
Most of today's Ford Transit models are characterized by original front part design, headlights, radiator grille, and bumper. Regarding the technical characteristics of Ford Transit, old petrol engines are finally modernized and replaced with the one that was used for Ford Ranger as well as new diesel engines volume of 2.2 liters for front-wheel drive.
