Suzuki Vitara is one of the pioneers of small crossovers’ class, which is very popular today. Suzuki Vitara is all-wheel drive SUV relating to J-class according to European classification. The first generation of Grand Vitara was manufactured at the plants of the company in Japan and Canada. For a start, we will deal with some confusion, which arose because of various names of the model depending on the sales market. So, in the homeland, in Japan, all generations of this SUV are called Suzuki Escudo. In countries of Eastern Europe and, respectively, in Russia, Escudo II received the name Grand Vitara and it is considered the separate model.
Initial Suzuki Vitara presented to the public in 1997 for the first time. A year later, its sales in Europe and America started. From the predecessor, Suzuki Vitara I inherited a frame design and all-wheel drive transmission "Part-time". Rear-drive is by default for the car and front-wheel-drive could be connected with the lever only if necessary.
The model was produced in three - and five-door options and the production line has a three-door version with a soft top. The model was called Grand Vitara Cabrio. In 2001, the world premiere of Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 was held at the Motor Show in Detroit. The car was extended by a half meter and, besides, raised a roof. Usually, such manipulations with standard models make the shape of the car a little silly. However, in a case with Grand Vitara, everything turned exactly the opposite. The car got the appearance that is much more interesting.
