All Years and ModificationsGordon Murray – the automobile designer who was engaged in the technological development of race cars for Formula 1 races was the author of the idea of the creation of the sports car adapted for driving on public roads. He shared the idea with the head of McLaren team, Ron Dennis to whom the project was very much pleasant. Later, McLaren Cars Limited company renamed further into McLaren Automotive and development as well as release small-scale sports car became a result of their agreement.
The famous automobile designer Peter Stevens, the creator of the successful sports car of Lotus Elan and other similar projects was involved in the creation of appearance and interior of future Mclaren F1. Gordon Murray became the technical director of the company. In reality, BMW Motorsport company was engaged in the embodiment of his ideas. The project documentation was ready during mid-1991 and after approval of the management of McLaren Group, developers started construction of a pilot model for drive tests. The first tests showed that McLaren Automotive was succeeded to create Mclaren F1 with record indicators.
Technical features of Mclaren F1 represents the real center of unusual technical and technology solutions – its weight despite huge engine, depending on version, fluctuates between 1062 and 1138 kilograms and the silhouette of extremely low body possesses characteristics which all modern supercars do not have. At the same time, due to original configuration, engineers managed to place in 3 places instead of two which is traditional for cars of this class. The seat of the driver of Mclaren F1 is located in the middle, but not with an edge as it is accepted. This position facilitates the landing into the rear part of the cabin where the seats for two passengers are placed.
Today, McLaren F1 continues to remain one of the fastest among supercars. Dynamics of dispersal exceeding its characteristics was shown only by Koenigsegg Agera R, Bugatti Veyron, SSC Ultimate Aero TT and Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. It should be taken into account that all these cars are completed with turbo engines. Thus, McLaren F1 remains the fastest with the atmospheric engine.
