New engines were specially designed for the US: gasoline V6 motor volume of 2.7 liters rated at 173 HP and diesel 2.0 liters TDI power of 105 HP. A top engine capacity of 2.3 liters could accelerate the car to 100 km/h in 8,8 seconds. Maximum speed was 216 km/h. The modification intended for specifically Japanese market had names of Ascot and Innova.
In 1998, the following generation became available. A new model year was developed by Japanese experts in cooperation with research centers in England as well as Germany. This Honda Accord became the most global model of the company, which was produced in Japan, England, Malaysia and sold in 140 countries. The car had an electric power steering with variable transmission ratio and multi-link suspension. More expensive options got limited slip front differential and stability control system. Thanks to the laser welding, the body became more robust and rigid. The cabin of the new Honda Accord sedan was spacious and quiet and was equipped with the fastest warm-up system. The model had two airbags, door strengthening beams, three-point seatbelts on the rear seats, ABS brake system, ventilated brake discs, automatic as well as manual transmissions. Six months after the announcement of the sedan, the next upgrade of Honda Accord was appeared at the market as a hatchback of class D.
According to technical details, the sedan and hatchback were virtually identical and produced at the factory in Swindon, England. Like the sedan, the hatchback was equipped with four-cylinder engines. In addition to Honda Accord sedans, wagon and coupe type of the modifications produced at the plant in Ohio were sold in Europe. Along with two-liters engine of Accord Coupe EX V6, three-liter V6 engine rated at 200 HP was also installed.
