Rolls Royce Phantom
All Years and ModificationsOn March 15th, Henry Royce and Charles Stewart Rolls decided to expand the partnership which led to the development of Rolls-Royce company that manufactured cars and aviation engines. At that time, there were not any ideas about the creation of premium representative limousines at all. The first power unit of the company had two-liter two-cylinder motor which was not the invention, but the only remake of Decauville. Nevertheless, businessmen managed to sell 16 copies.
Another model – Silver Ghost became popular. Why ghost? Just because Rolls-Royce always distinguished with the noiseless drive; for this reason, the silent motor which equipped to the model became a competitive advantage of the car from the business perspective. This power unit served as a heart for the novelty under the name of Phantom. If in early years, both R letters of Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost had one color, then after the tragic death of one of the founders – Charles Rolls in 1910 – one of them was painted in black.
Although Rolls Royce Phantom did not enjoy such demand as Silver Ghost, nevertheless, it was shipped not only in England but also in the USA (nearly 8000 chassis, 3500 units of Phantom I were assembled). However, it is almost impossible to find identical Phantom I: body design for Rolls Royce Phantom was done by 7 studios. In 1929, Phantom the second series released: the model could speed up to 170 km/h and the chassis was distinguished by an unusual smoothness for that time. The company required five years to present its successor - the third generation of Rolls Royce Phantom.
Since the end of 1968, Rolls Royce Phantom V replaced previous models. Constructively, the model remained the same but received more advanced equipment. Body types were only limousine or Landaulet. In 1978, the novelty received the engine with the dimension of 101.1x99.1 mm (6750 cm3) and 3-speed automatic transmission. Later, Rolls-Royce company officially presented the latest long-awaited Phantom. Development of the car was completely constructed from the scratch whose history began with the phrase told by Sir Henry Royce: “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”.
